South Gippsland is famous for its natural environment. Its undulating landscape provides arresting views of forest, waterways, plains, inlets and coastline, drawing in tourists and rewarding those who live here. It is home to unique flora like the Strzelecki Gum and it provides habitat for myriad wildlife including the Giant Gippsland Earthworm, found nowhere else on earth. Protecting biodiversity has never been more important which is why South Gippsland Landcare Network (SGLN) is developing a Biodiversity Protection Plan to guide a coordinated response in improving the natural environment.
SGLN has brought together a group of regional stakeholders including South Gippsland Shire Council, West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Department of Environment Energy and Climate Action as well as many other important organisations that manage land or work with landholders to protect natural values. These organisations have contributed to the plan’s development and will be forming an ongoing committee to implement the plan.
This Biodiversity Protection Plan for South Gippsland draft will be available for public comment in June. We look forward to sharing it in future newsletters and hearing your feedback.
