On Tuesday 26 September SGLN held an online webinar giving members the opportunity to engage with two respected First Nations leaders, Troy McDonald and Jamie WIlliamson.
Troy is a Kurnai man who is both Chair of the Gunaikurnai Land And Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) and member of the First Nations Assembly for the Eastern Region while Jamie is a Yuin man now residing in regional Victoria who was previously the CEO of Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative.
Both presentations, and the Q&A which followed, were highly informative and much appreciated by participants. Troy spoke about the history of GLaWAC and reassured participants that Native Title poses no threat to private owned land. He also shared a fantastic video clip of Nanjet, the beautiful property at Yanakie recently purchased by GLaWAC which is providing Gurnaikirnai people with the opportunity to be on Country.
Jamie spoke about the Uluru Statement and the reasons 83% of First Nations people are advocating for the Voice. He also included links to some reliable websites to enable us to discern between fact and fiction in the lead up to the Referendum.
Among the questions, “How can we be good allies” stood out. The answer was simple: learn, listen, and stand up when you hear something being said that is incorrect.
