Woody Weed Control adjacent to the South Gippsland Hwy

South Gippsland Landcare Network (SGLN) has received $50,000 to improve the habitat and condition of high biodiversity value woodlands adjacent to the South Gippsland Hwy.

Funding Program: Gippsland Transport Environmental Projects (Regional Roads Victoria)

Timeline: May 2022 – March 2023

South Gippsland Landcare Network (SGLN) has received $50,000 to improve the habitat and condition of high biodiversity value woodlands adjacent to the South Gippsland Hwy. The funds will be used to control woody weeds at two locations – 1) a linear tract of woodland between the highway and Great Southern Rail Trail near Meeniyan and 2) Ritchie Nature Reserve near Korumburra.

The woody weeds to be controlled include Sweet Pittosporum, Cotoneaster, Holly, Tree Tobacco, small Pines and Mirror Bush. Their control will improve natural regeneration within the native woodlands and improve the integrity of these woodlands as important wildlife corridors.

The methods used for control are specific to controlling large weed trees and shrubs – often referred to as ‘frill and fill’ (or drill and inject) and ‘cut and paste’ technique. Public workshops will be held to inform landowners and general public of these specific weed control techniques.

If you are interested in this project and the upcoming workshops please register your interest with Nick Stephens (Facilitator) at nick.stephens@sgln.net.au

In the meantime feel free to check the video links below on woody weeds. General information on controlling local weeds can be found on our website here
